Melville’s Film Noir

Le Doulos (1962)

San Francisco’s Bay Area Reporter has published a good article, Double-crossed in the City of Lights, on French noir director Herman Melville, centered around his film Le Doulos (1962), playing August 17-23 at the Castro.

  1. Jean-Pierre Melville’s Le Cercle Rouge is also a masterpeice, and a strong case for it being a Noir can be made. I recently saw Army of Shadows which has tendencies, but really deals more specifically with the horrors of Nazi occupation in Paris and th resistance. In fact, given how much the nightmare of WWII effected noir, a case may be made.
