  1. “The screenplay by Clifford Odets is based on a Cornell Woolrich story, and is as dark as any noir and as left as a Hollywood movie could go at the time.”

Indeed Tony, and this is typical for Woolrich whose writing is among the darkest of any scribe. But as you rightly note, the dialogue rings true, and the performances are extraordinary. I also know people like the world-wise taxi driver. In fact I drove myself once and met a few other drivers who imparted more wisdom than university professors. And one security guard in particular, was one of the most brilliant observers of human nature I’ve ever come across. Val Lewton was another director who culled some brilliance out of the purported “ordinary.”

Anyway, great opening piece for the makeover, and remarkably insightful.
