Day Into Noir

“Noir is premised on the audience’s need to see failure risked, courted, and sometimes won. Noir provided losing with a mystique.”

An excellent article on film noir by author, Ann Douglas, from the March 2007 issue of Vanity Fair magazine with the discussion ranging from the psyche to the metaphysics of noir. Available on-line only to subscribers.

There is also a bonus only on-line feature, The Shadows Know, a guide to film noir by Nathaniel Rich, senior editor of The Paris Review and the author of San Francisco Noir: The City in Film Noir from 1940 to the Present, where he lists the top 10 classic noir films, the top 10 noir films you’ve probably never heard of, and the 3 worst noirs you’ve never heard of.

  1. I own all of the aforementioned “noirish” films that you mentioned in your article. (with the exception of 2 of the “worst” of, and they are the 1946 film “Suspense” and the 1949 film “Chinatown at Midnight.”) Btw, I just recently, purchased the 1948 film “Blonde Ice” earlier this year.

“An excellent article on film noir by author, Ann Douglas, from the March 2007 issue of Vanity Fair magazine with the discussion ranging from the psyche to the metaphysics of noir. Available on-line only to subscribers.” I wonder if author Ann Douglas, article is still available on-line?

D’Ambra, did I mention, that I like to read your “past” articles?

…not when my list of films that are considered noirs are compared to other collectors of “noirish” films.(I think that my list of noirs “pale” in comparison to theirs!)
