NOIR CITY celebrates its 10th anniversary with a 10-day San Francisco program at the Castro Theatre starting January 29, 2012 celebrating Frisco noir, including a Dashiell Hammett marathon, and a guest appearence by Angie Dickinson.
Rare titles to be screened include a brand new 35mm print of The Great Gatsby (1949), starring Alan Ladd, which has been buried for decades. Noir maestro Eddie Muller has persuaded Universal Pictures to strike a preservation print for NOIR CITY. The studio also is providing a brand new 35mm print of Naked Alibi (1949), starring Gloria Grahame. The Foundation has also funded a new 35mm preservation of the “lost” 1946 classic Three Strangers, which had no viewable prints and has never been released on DVD. NOIR CITY will also premiere the Film Noir Foundation’s recently completed preservation of the 1950 Michael Curtiz film The Breaking Point, starring John Garfield.

Arthur ‘Big Boy’ Crudup had the measure of ’Mean Ol’ Frisco’ back in the late 40s:
Well, that mean old, mean old frisco,
And that low down santa fe
Well, that mean old frisco, and that low down santa fe
Well it carried my baby away, and it’s blown right back on me
I was standing, i was listening, for that southern
Whistle blow
I was standing and listening for that southern whistle to blow
Lord, she did not catch the southern, and now where do you suppose that woman might have gone?
Well, then i ain’t, i ain’t got no, got no special
Rider
Here, lord
I ain’t got no special rider here
Well, i think i leave, ’cause i don’t feel welcome
Well, my mama she done told me, and my papa told me, too
Well, my mama she done told me, and my papa told me, too
Everybody grins in your face son, well, they ain’t no friends of yours

Oh would I love to see THE GREAT GATSBY especially! I am wondering if this new print of Cutiz’ THE BREAKING POINT is the one offered up now on the Warner Archives DVD. I own it, and will soon negotiate a quality check.
Anyway, with a guest appearance by Ms. Dickinson, more inspired work from Eddie Muller and a buffo line-up, this is yet another celebration time for the noir community! Lucky dogs those San Franciscoites!
